Protected Dry Forest Jerusalen
This dry forest is a great place to stop on the way to the northern birding sites near Otavalo. It is a protected area that receives 600 mm of rainfall with vegetation that has adapted to this desert like conditions. It is a good place to find the Giant Hummingbird and the Purple Collared Woodstar.
Bosque Jerusalen is inside and Important Bird Area - IBA (EC107) where the last Turquoise-throated Puffleg (Eriocnemis godini) was collected 150 years ago without any recent records. The IBA extends from the Guayllabamba Valley toward Puellaro and Perucho following the Guayllabamba River.
